Databending Tutorial v0.1 by praseodym Databending Tutorial v0.1 by praseodym
Phew.. I'm finally done. Decided to write a tutorial about how I do glitch art. I'm neither a professional in it nor am I doing it for a long time, actually I'm pretty new at it, but still, I decided there should be a tutorial for it on deviantArt.

I think there's not much more to say about it, the rest is in the tutorial. :D

to glitch the beginning, go into the N++ hex editor, and scroll (with the bar, but carefully) until you see a bunch of code that says stuff like "<exif:Sharpness>Hard</exif>" or something along those lines. then use your scroll wheel until you see just rows of periods with some random characters occasionally. at the end of those rows should be the beginning of the file. you could probably also fuck with the exif tags too, so instead of saying "hard" in that example, it could say "soft" or maybe a less appropriate 4-letter word ;b

also you could put a sort of signature right at the beginning, like "hey, screw you, this is my image"

Can this also be done with videos?

You've ever got this question answered? I'm looking into doing something like this. I would go for an export in frames using Ffmpeg, and then batch-editing those frames, and reassembling them with ffmpeg to a movie. However, I expect the result to be superrandom. So perhaps I'll do some video-editing to only see the distorted images at certain intervals (or linked with the audio).

Since there's something surrounding our minds, called the noosphere, I'm pretty sure someone already did this :-)

Wonderful tutorial. I've recently been doing a bit with glitch, audacity and word pad mainly and this seems to be a real cool way to glitch things as well.

Great tut !! =D

Also, be careful when editing the file, the header must remain unedited because this can corrupt the file into not opening anymore ..
You recognize it by it's content, such as
Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Windows, xmp:ModifyDate>2012-11-29T17:55:57+01:00</xmp:ModifyDate, ...
and so on. It's in the beginning of the image's code.

Happy glitching ! :smoking:

interesting tutorial- very good. Except that you don't really mention much more than the hex editor and show the pictures! Please help! I'm not very good at reading between the lines- what do you do with the graphic editor?

I tried this on several images, and it only ended up erasing them below whatever point I edited. :<

Nice tutorial! I've tried it, but all I get are overly corrupted files--what am I doing wrong? (using notepad++ with hex plugin, like you mentioned).

This is really interesting and was fun to try!

However when I try to edit PNGs or GIFs I generally just end up with most of the image being black or white. The editor doesn't look like that for me, either, in neat rows like yours - it's a random jumble of code with a lot of unusual characters.

Try Audacity. Its a audio editing tool, but it can produce really nifty effects :D
